Fighting for fair grocery prices
and genuine competition
Welcome
The Grocery Action Group was formed to lower the prices of groceries for all Kiwis. Our vision is to influence government, the regulators and other parties to deliver a competitive and consumer-focused grocery sector in New Zealand.
"A lack of competition had allowed supermarkets to push grower margins to the limit, while at the same time charging consumers too much - and they were making a lot of money in the process,"
- NZ Stuff
Since we formed in January 2024, we have made huge strides, organising sessions with politicians, the Commerce Commission, suppliers and potential competitors. Following recent announcements we have reason to be hopeful the pressure is working. Grocery Minister Nicola Willis has put a forced sale of existing supermarket brands firmly on the table. That would mean brands like New World, Pak’nSave, Four Square (all owned by Foodstuffs) and Woolworths and Fresh Choice (all owned by Woolworths) would have to be split up into some form of separate ownership. That’s great news for Kiwi consumers, who are currently paying some of the highest prices on the planet for food. It’s also good for suppliers who will have competing markets in which to sell their goods.
But the battle is not over. The duopoly represents a $25 billion industry. Foodstuffs is already litigating against the Commerce Commission’s refusal to let it merge its North and South island operations. The backroom lobbying will be fierce.
So, more still needs to be done. We and other likeminded organisations support the Government’s latest move. It is bold and courageous. Ultimately it should see Kiwis enjoy better prices, better quality and more choice at the supermarket.
But to hold the Government’s feet to the fire we need your support.

Every bit counts!
